Hello everyone, Thomas here with GlasWerks. As some of you may know, we are a PPF/Automotive restyle solution for drivers in the DMV area, and from time to time, we get something extra special on our hands. Recently, just that occurred, and this Carrera RS N/GT came in for complete protection of its "STERNRUBIN" paint.
Carrera RS N/GT
A bit of history for those who may not be familiar with what you're looking at, in the early 90s, the 964 was Porsche's face on the world's racing stage. Due to this, they pushed to have track-ready versions developed of both the rear and all-wheel drive cars.
The Carrera 2 would become the basis for the very successful 964 Carrera Cup and its slightly refined, road-legal sibling, the Carrera RS. Then came the N/GT, armed with the M003 package and aimed at the BPR's Group N and ADAC's race series; the N/GT was track-ready and an absolute fire breather allowed to drive on public roads.
The N/GT is drastically lighter. Porsche fit the car with thinner side glass, an aluminum hood, reduced battery size, a more straightforward wiring loom, lightweight door cards, and minimal carpeting on top of the removal of its insulation and soundproofing! Porsche cut a lot of that weight so that a welded-in matter roll cage, larger capacity fuel reservoir, fire extinguisher, cockpit battery kill switch, and two Nomex racing seats with full harnesses could be added into the cabin.
Like the 964 RS model, the N/GT has a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated M64/03 Flat-six that generates 260-270 horsepower with 240 pound-feet of torque, respectively. Power moves through a single-mass flywheel, racing clutch, and five-speed trans with ZF asymmetric limited slip.
Larger adjustable anti-roll bars are fitted, and all bushings are swapped with ball joints on the N/GT model. Bilstein handles the coil-over shocks, which have been tuned to be stiffer to accommodate track driving and the 2" suspension drop on the car. Additionally, if you're driving fast, you must stop short, so brakes were bolstered to Brembo four-piston calipers with drilled Turbo Rotors. Even the wheels were wider, 17" units in magnesium by SM.
As you can see, this thing is a Unicorn of Porsche culture. Only 290 were ever produced, a small percentage of 964s. In addition to that rarity, this one being ruby stone adds to that perfection, in our opinion.
Working on the 964RS NG/T was a unique experience for many reasons. PPF on this is a must to protect that gorgeous color and maintain its fully restored, better-than-perfect condition, so we began with a thorough chemical and mechanical decontamination session. This ensures the paintwork is up to our standards and is how we start every PPF process. Once satisfied, we used STEK DYNOshield PPF on this project for its extreme gloss and clarity. DYNOshield also has aggressive self-healing & Hydrophobic top coat features that make it ideal for this Porsche. This whole film application was custom/bulked with no machine-cut edges. The typical seams & gaps left from a kit installation wouldn't be right on such a car..or any Porsche handled by our team. It is vital considering the difference in how these Porsches are made compared to a more familiar modern Porsche.
For example, A modern 911 will have the roof clearly separated from the other body panels. On the 964, the roof stretches up from the top of the engine bay in the rear, wrapping around the front windshield to meet the fenders and hood. The entire car is covered in PPF, including the interior roll bars, to minimize damage during ingress/egress. Once film installation is complete, we ceramic coat the magnesium wheels, braking system, and wheelhouses with GYEON MOHS and RIM. Finally, we covered the windshield in our TPU-based armor for added protection while moving. This will stand as one of our most memorable jobs. Our lead technician stated, "The ruby stone red paint was undoubtedly one of the best I've worked on. I am used to protecting the latest and greatest from Porsche fresh from the factory, so my first air-cooled 911 turning out to be a better than new 964RS NG/T from 1992 is undoubtedly something I never thought I would encounter." We're thankful to the owner for allowing us to share it with you.
